2017 Inductees

The 2017 Wall of Fame Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, November 16, 2017, in the high school auditorium. Recipients were  Col. James Fraley, Jr. (1968), Sophie Pasternak (1940), and Jane Rieger (1962). The Student Council assisted with welcoming guests and the high school Chamber Choir performed.  Dr. Craig Butler, Superintendent, gave closing remarks.  The school provided refreshments prior to the ceremony and lunch following the ceremony. 

2017 Inductee - Colonel James A. Fraley, Jr., Class of 1968

Military Accomplishments

  •  Col. Fraley was born on January 22, 1951, in Bethlehem, PA.
  • He graduated from Hellertown High School in 1968.
  • Col. Fraley received an AA degree (Cum Laude) from Valley Forge Military Junior College in 1970.
  • In 1972, he received a BS degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee.
  • A Regular Army commission was received through the Army ROTC program in 1972. He was detailed Infantry and completed the Infantry Officer Basic Training Course, Fort Benning, GA, in December, 1972. His first assignment was as a Training Officer with the 3rd   BCT BDE, Fort Ord, CA. Upon completion of his detail, Col. Fraley was assigned to the Directorate of Industrial Operations, Fort Ord, CA, as Chief, Command Maintenance
       Evaluation Team. 
  • Upon completion of his service obligation in 1976, Col. Fraley requested assignment to the US Army Reserve. 
  • An MBA degree in Marketing was received from Golden Gate University in 1976.
  • Upon completion of his service obligation in 1976, Col. Fraley requested assignment to the US Army Reserve.
  • While in the US Army Reserve, Col. Fraley pursued a civilian career with John Wanamaker in Philadelphia, PA. While building his civilian career, he volunteered for the Individual Mobilization Augmentation (IMA) program. 
  • From 1980 through 1985, Col. Fraley served in various quartermaster positions and completed the Quartermaster Officer Advanced Course and the RMY Command and  General Staff College (with honor).

 

  • In December,1985, he accepted an AGR assignment as the first full-time Battalion S-4 and later Executive Officer with the 157th Support Battalion, 157th Separate Infantry Brigade (Mech),  Edgemont, PA.
  • In June, 1989, he was assigned as Assistant Professor of Military Science and Executive   Officer with the Suncoast Battalion, Army ROTC, University of South Florida, Tampa.
  • In July, 1994, he attended the resident Logistics Executive Development Course, Fort Lee,   VA, and in January, 1995, he was assigned as the Logistics Staff Officer, Command Logistics Review Program, DCSLOG, US Army Reserve Command, Atlanta, GA. In June, 1995, he assumed the duty of Chief, Equipment Branch, DCSLOG, USARC. He was responsible for nearly all of the Army Reserve’s equipment assets.

  • Following his two and one-half year tour, Col. Fraley was selected for one of only ten U.S. Army Reserve Resident Chairs at the US Army War College, Carlisle, PA.
  • In June, 1998, he was assigned a high-profile position as the Reserve Forces Advisor, J-4, Logistics Directorate, The Joint Staff, The Pentagon, Washington, DC.
  • On September 11, 2001, Col. Fraley witnessed the attack upon the Pentagon. He and his team prepared a Reserve Forces partial mobilization plan for President G. W. Bush’s signature.
  • Col. Fraley’s military awards include: The Meritorious Service Medal w/2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Commendation Medal w/1 OLC, the Army Commendation    Medal, the National Defense Service Medal w/Bronze Star, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/Hour Glass device, the Joint    Meritorious Unit Award, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge. 
  • Upon his retirement on August 31, 2002, he was honorably discharged from Active Duty and awarded The Legion of Merit.
  • Col. Fraley is married to the former Barbara Ann Schaffer, RN, of Knoxville, TN. They maintain their home in Bradenton, FL, where he manages their private horse farm. 

 When he earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Col. Fraley personally requested Army General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. to preside at the promotion ceremony. 

2017 Inductee - Sophie Pasternak, Class of 1940

Army/Civilian Nursing

  • Sophie Pasternak was born on December 25, 1922, in Bethlehem, PA.
  • She was a 1940 graduate of Hellertown High School.
  • In 1944, she graduated from the Mount Sinai School of Nursing in Philadelphia.
  • During World War II, Sophie was a Women’s Army Corps nurse in, and she was recognized for her work during that period.
  • Sophie received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degree from Columbia University, NY.  
  • She was the Assistant Director of the Orthopedic Department of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York City, NY, for 32 years, retiring in 1982.
  • Sophie was on the Board of Directors of the Hellertown Historical Society.

2017 Inductee - Jane Rieger, Class of 1962

Army/Civilian Nursing

 

  • Born October 28, 1944.
  • Graduated from Hellertown-Lower Saucon High School in 1962.
  • Jane began her career as a secretary in the Hellertown School District as of July, 1962.
  • She remained in that position just 4 months short of 52 years, passing away 3 months prior to her retirement.
  • The district recognized Jane for 50 years of service with a surprise party on April 25, 2012.
  • A certificate of recognition and appreciation for outstanding commitment and dedication to the students of the Saucon Valley School District was presented to her in June, 2012.
  • During her tenure in the Saucon Valley School District, Jane was very involved with after school activities and assisted with many events. 
  • Jane was an active lifetime member of the Saucon Valley Alumni Association.
  • She was Secretary of the Spring Valley Sportsmen Club’s Women Auxiliary.
  • She was an active member of the Waldheim Women’s Auxiliary Corps.
  • Jane was acknowledged with a certificate of appreciation from the Miller-Keystone Blood Center for her lifetime donation of 11 gallons of life-saving blood for patients in community hospitals.
  • "Jane was a shining example of loyalty to her job for 52 years and to the Saucon Valley School District its students and staff.” 
  • The school and students were Jane’s life.
